As its title implies, Tool's 1992 debut EP is none too impressed by religion, though fear, hypocritical moralizing and conformity all get their turn in the spotlight. Opiate is a collection of heavy, aggressive, cynical music in songs noticeably shorter and more direct than the band's later work — an early, hard-hitting glimpse of what was to come.
