But it was their own material — written and performed by Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm — that made them icons. Their 1969 self-titled second album is an inimitable distillation of compelling storytelling, loose country-rock tunefulness, and superbly crafted songwriting, capturing the essence of American music as well as anybody. Includes "Up on Cripple Creek," "Rag Mama Rag" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."
