Originally released alongside the band's 2014 Australian concerts, Mala Kunia features seven new compositions — two co-composed by then-new member Ulrich Schnauss with Edgar Froese — and opened a new Tangerine Dream era, The Quantum Years, returning to a more back-to-basics approach influenced by quantum physics. The album is named for two Aboriginal tribes said to have lived around Uluru (Ayers Rock): the Mala on the sunny side and the Kunia on the shady side of the rock.
