Following the largely instrumental Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants, Hotter Than July was a return to classic form for Stevie Wonder. Released in 1980 on Motown's Tamla label, it became a top-3 pop album and a #1 R&B record for more than three months, led by the singles "Master Blaster (Jammin')," "Lately," and "I Ain't Gonna Stand for It," plus the now-classic "Happy Birthday," a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. The album was certified platinum.
