Some of soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy's most interesting recordings are his earliest. After stints with Dixieland groups and then with Cecil Taylor, Lacy made several sessions that displayed his love of Thelonious Monk alongside his varied experiences. Here his soprano contrasts beautifully with Charles Davis' baritone on three of Monk's most difficult tunes ("Introspection," "Played Twice," and "Criss Cross"), plus two Cecil Taylor compositions and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," with John Ore on bass and Roy Haynes on drums.
