By the time the Oscar Peterson Trio cut We Get Requests in 1964, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen had been with Peterson for five years and performed like a well-oiled machine. Producer Jim Davis steered the sessions toward how the trio actually sounded live, treating listeners to mostly popular songs of the day — including bossa nova tunes and film themes — with the emphasis placed squarely on the melodies.
