Brought to Atlantic by Modern Jazz Quartet pianist John Lewis, Ornette Coleman released The Shape of Jazz to Come in 1959 to coincide with his quartet's New York debut. After the worn-out hard bop routine of the era, this pianoless-quartet music arrived like a breath of fresh air, balancing catchy folk-like motifs with frenetic interplay and including two of Coleman's most beautiful compositions, "Peace" and "Lonely Woman."
