Though both had been giants since the 1920s, Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins recorded together only once — this 1962 Impulse! session, presented here in its entirety. Hawkins's robust tenor meets an all-star group drawn from the Ellington band, including Ray Nance on cornet and violin, trombonist Lawrence Brown, altoist Johnny Hodges and baritonist Harry Carney. High points include an exuberant "The Jeep Is Jumpin'," an inventive remake of "Mood Indigo," and several new Ellington pieces.
