Among pianist Bill Evans's many live albums, At Town Hall Volume 1 has always been one of his most delicate and elegant. His playing is taut and graceful, with lovely long improvisational lines and a snappy, fluid attack, across a thoughtfully chosen mix of standards and originals — including a suite written in memory of his father, who had died just days before. Recorded at Town Hall, New York, February 21, 1966 with bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Arnold Wise.
