At last these early recordings, set down by Miles Davis for Columbia in 1955 and 1956, are available on LP again. The legendary first great quintet — Davis, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones — runs through well-loved standards and bebop classics with extraordinary inventiveness, Davis's vibrato-less trumpet handed seamlessly to Coltrane on "Bye Bye Blackbird." Though it never gained the fame of Kind of Blue, this set is full of gems and points the way toward modal jazz.
