Recorded in early 2010 by the core duo of Carson Cox and David Vassalotti, (Strange Songs) In The Dark marks Merchandise's decisive break from their straightforward early post-punk EPs, moving toward the experimental, studio-based pop later explored on Children of Desire and Totale Nite. Despite its lo-fi home-recorded nature, the album is full of hooks — notably "I Locked the Door" and "Worthless Apology" — while moodier moments like "Foolish" and "In The Dark" foreshadow the band's eventual move to 4AD. Originally a split release between DIY labels Katorga Works and Drugged Conscience Records.
