Emperor of Sand is the 2017 album from heavy-metal titans Mastodon, a deeply imaginative concept record that ponders the nature of time through the myth of a man sentenced to death in a malevolent desert. Reflecting on mortality — sand as a metaphor for time slipping through a cosmic hourglass — the album was recorded at The Quarry in Kennesaw, GA with producer Brendan O'Brien, who first worked with the band on 2009's Crack the Skye.
