Traditional village music transformed into fiery, frenetic underground hip hop. Emerging from the DIY studio renaissance of early-2000s West Africa, Patriote merges modern hip hop with the traditional instruments and rhythms of Niger — duma and kalango sampled and looped beneath syncopated, ragga-inspired flows. Formed in Niamey in 2002, Mamaki Boys call their "tradi-moderne" sound a cultural manifesto, repurposing the tools of globalization in the fight for cultural identity. Originally self-released on limited CDR in Niger; this LP plays loud at 45rpm.
