Funky soul-jazz from saxophonist Lou Donaldson, recorded in 1967 with a killer quintet: Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Lonnie Smith on organ, Jimmy Ponder on guitar, and the tight drumming of a young Idris Muhammad (credited here under his birth name, Leo Morris). The set bridges Lou's earlier Blue Note soul-jazz with his later jazz-funk groove, and its standout cover of "Ode to Billie Joe" went on to become one of the most sampled tracks in Blue Note history. This Tone Poet edition, produced by Joe Harley and cut all-analog by Kevin Gray, captures the session with reference-grade clarity.
