Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins was a giant of post-war blues whose style stayed rooted in the pre-war Texas tradition, a true poet who invented most of his lyrics on the spot. This June 4, 1963 session, on which he played acoustic guitar, ranks among his finest, thanks in large part to the sensitive support of bassist Leonard Gaskin and drummer Herbie Lovelle, who followed his irregular bar patterns and abrupt song endings with remarkable feel. Part of Analogue Productions' acclaimed audiophile Prestige stereo reissue series, mastered from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray.
