Johnny Winter's 1969 self-titled debut for Columbia introduced the gaunt, cross-eyed albino bluesman whose fluid, gutsy guitar playing drew comparisons to the young Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. Winter made clear that his sole interest was the blues, evoking the growling groove of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters while spinning sleek, nimble-fingered lines. Both sides of this debut bear that out.
