Despite its title, this album is not a concert recording — these original Jef Gilson compositions were captured a month after his historic big-band performance at the Salle Gaveau, at the celebrated Studio Davout. Playing adventurous big-band jazz in a hall dedicated to classical music since 1907 was a groundbreaking act, and the date features a roster of then-unknown young French players — among them Michel Portal, Bernard Lubat and Jacques Di Donato — who would go on to major careers. A fiercely independent pianist, composer, arranger and producer, Gilson self-produced most of his work, and this SFP session stands among his finest.
