Released only on vinyl in February 2003, Ruff Draft remains the elusive key release in J Dilla's catalog — a turning point recorded in the wake of a failed major-label deal, where the producer reinvented himself as a fiercely independent artist. In contrast to the mellow vibes he brought to A Tribe Called Quest, Common and others, Ruff Draft revealed a new side of Dilla: freewheeling, in-your-face synthesizers and a sample-heavy approach as bangin' as it was experimental. This Stones Throw reissue adds previously unreleased tracks on Side C.
