Georg Solti conducts the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in a ravishing program of operatic preludes and overtures originally released in 1959. Prized for its indisputably beautiful string tone and superior dynamics, the recording captures Solti and one of the world's great opera orchestras in full bloom. Listen closely to the last band on side one and you can hear the famous London Underground subway rumbling beneath Kingsway Hall — a constant the Decca engineers had to work around.
