Outward Bound, recorded in 1960, was Eric Dolphy's debut as a leader and an early signal of the restless, boundary-pushing voice he would become. Leading a quintet featuring trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Jaki Byard, bassist George Tucker and drummer Roy Haynes, Dolphy moves between alto saxophone, bass clarinet and flute across a program that balances hard-bop drive with adventurous new ideas.
