One of the great live documents of the jazz avant-garde's golden moment. Recorded at New York's Five Spot Cafe in July 1961, this set captures multi-reedman Eric Dolphy — on alto saxophone, bass clarinet, and flute — in fearless, exploratory dialogue with the brilliant young trumpeter Booker Little, who would die tragically just months later. Backed by Mal Waldron's probing piano and the elastic rhythm team of Richard Davis and Ed Blackwell, the quintet stretches out across three extended pieces of daring, deeply felt, edge-of-the-seat improvisation. Essential listening.
This Analogue Productions reissue is mastered from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray, plated by Gary Salstrom, pressed on 200-gram vinyl at QRP, and housed in a tip-on jacket on thick cardboard stock.
