Love Calls pairs two of the great big-band tenor saxophonists, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis (of Count Basie's band) and Paul Gonsalves (of Duke Ellington's), on a 1968 RCA Victor date devoted to ballads. Rather than the cutting-contest fireworks each man is known for, the two reveal their tender, lyrical sides, with Davis driving and confident and Gonsalves sinuous and intimate. They are supported with taste and sensitivity by Roland Hanna (piano), Ben Tucker (bass), Grady Tate (drums), and Everett Barksdale (guitar).
