In 1978 Pharoah Sanders went into the studio with Ed Kelly, a pillar of the San Francisco and Oakland jazz scene, for six tracks spanning standards, soul jazz and two real gems. Issued as Ed Kelly and Friend because Sanders was then under contract to Arista, the album moves from the string-laced "Rainbow Song" to the burning intensity of Sanders' own "Newborn," a tender "You Send Me" and an early reading of his anthem "You've Got to Have Freedom."
