When Norman Granz signed Johnny Hodges in 1951, it set the stage for a series of small-group dates pairing the great altoist with Duke Ellington. Recorded in 1958 and 1959 and originally released in 1959, Side By Side harks back to the intimate Ellington-Hodges sessions of the 1930s, but with Billy Strayhorn taking the piano chair on several cuts and guests such as drummer Jo Jones and trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Harry 'Sweets' Edison adding spark. The result is relaxed, swinging small-group jazz at its finest.
