Turntablist DJ Abilities — best known as one half of the revered indie-rap duo Eyedea & Abilities — returns with Phonograph Phoenix, his most ambitious solo statement yet. Departing from his sample-based past, he builds these compositions from the ground up in Ableton Live, layering deep bass, funky drum loops and atmospheric synths beneath razor-sharp cuts and select vocal chops. Across the record he digs into grief, loss and personal reckoning while leaving plenty of room for hope and optimism.
