There's nothing else in jazz quite like this collection, recorded — astonishingly — in just one session on 20 January 1963. Conceived partly as a ballet, it unfolds as a single continuous composition divided into movements, with liner notes written by Mingus's psychotherapist. The ornate ensemble orchestration produces a sound somewhere between jazz and folk.
