Cut at Audio-Video Studios in New York in January 1956, Pithecanthropus Erectus is one of Charles Mingus's defining early statements as a composer and bandleader. The title suite is ambitious program music, while the quintet stretches out across the Gershwin standard "A Foggy Day" and two further Mingus originals. Remastered by Speakers Corner using pure analogue components from the master tapes to the cutting head, and pressed in its original mono.
