By the time Bill Withers made this debut recording, he'd already served years in the US Navy, worked as a milkman, and installed toilets in jets — all while bombarding record companies with self-produced demos. His 1971 breakthrough came when producer Booker T. Jones brought him into the studio with guitarist Stephen Stills, drummer Al Jackson, and bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn. On Just As I Am, Withers demonstrates a universal, mature command as singer, composer, and performer that he would rarely surpass.
