Portrait in Jazz was the first of four albums by the legendary Bill Evans Trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, capturing the group as they developed the remarkable creative rapport Evans called "simultaneous improvisation." Recorded in 1959, not long after Evans' celebrated stint with the Miles Davis Sextet, it clearly captures the exciting sound of new ideas being born.
